A FDW (Foreign Domestic Worker) requires a valid work permit to be employed in Singapore. Any resident of Singapore seeking to hire a FDW can apply for a work permit from the authorities or through an accredited employment agency.

There is also an option where, instead of recruiting directly from overseas, an employer can transfer an FDW from their current employer, making the process simpler and faster. Additionally, there is the advantage of acquiring an employee who is already familiar with the country’s surroundings and work culture.  This can result in savings on recruitment and training time as well as costs.

A work permit transfer will require both the current and prospective employers to carry out certain steps:

For Current Employer:

• Make sure the helper completed her 6-monthly medical examination.
• Approve the transfer request from the new employer in MOM website.
• Pay levy up till the date the new employer issues the helper work permit.
• Cut the cancelled work permit card and discard it to prevent misuse.

For New Employer:

• Ensure the helper has completed her 6-monthly medical examination, with a work permit validity more than 30 days.
• Obtain approval from the current employer to transfer the helper.
• Submit an application in MOM website.
• Purchase a new Security Bond, as well as Medical and Personal Accident Insurance for the helper.
• Complete and sign the declaration form, and have the Work Permit issued for the helper on the agreed transfer date.
